About ¡BRILLA! El Despertar del Alebrije en Mi // Glow! The Awakening of the Alebrije in Me

In ¡Brilla! Glow!, audiences are transported to 1930s Mexico City, where Pedro Linares, stricken with illness, falls into a fever dream that takes him into Prismatica, a world where alebrijes exist but remain divided by color and ideology. Believing that humans possess infinite wisdom, the creatures battle to claim Pedro as their own. Through his journey, Pedro reveals the struggles and contradictions of the human world, leading the alebrijes to discover that true wisdom lies not in dominance, but in unity, self-acceptance, and collaboration. This vibrant tale explores pressing themes such as race, global warming, and belonging, urging audiences to embrace their own brilliance and collective strength.

About La Carpa Teen Ensemble & A Host of People

La Carpa Teen Ensemble is a bilingual program of A Host of People, created to center the voices and stories of Latiné youth in Detroit. Through a collaborative creative process, young artists explore their culture, identity, and individual narratives, strengthening their voices and guiding them to embrace their unique light. While focusing on theater arts, La Carpa also nurtures the diverse talents of its participants, providing a platform where they can feel seen, connected, and uplifted. Ultimately, La Carpa seeks to empower youth to illuminate their communities and futures through artistic expression.

A Host of People is a multi-racial Detroit-based ensemble theater company creating original work for social change that celebrates imagination, complexity, and the synthesis of seemingly disparate elements—at once epic and intimate, political and personal, poetic and approachable. AHOP exists to create aesthetically rigorous, intellectually challenging theater that is warm, welcoming, and inspiring to people from all walks of life. We choose our subject matter and themes carefully with an eye to stories, topics, and aesthetic approaches that will be equally thrilling to the most adventurous theater fans as well as those with less exposure to the form. This is how A Host of People moves people: we play with the light and the dark; the head and the heart.

Citizen Kane! "It's Terrific!" proclaimed the posters. And they were right.

Marking the feature film debut of the famously mercurial Hollywood auteur, Orson Welles, this drama of power, politics and regret is as engrossing as it is innovative. The film examines the tumultuous life and career of its title character, newspaper owner Charles Foster Kane (played by Welles) a composite of American business tycoons reminiscent of real-life media mogul William Randolph Hearst. Told in flashback, the film pieces together a life, an attempt to explain a mystery from the recollections of a man’s friends, enemies, and lovers. At turns poignant and biting, Citizen Kane looms large as an enduring and artful piece of entertainment that has often been credited with revolutionizing the language of cinema.

But it’s also just terrific. Come experience it with us at the Senate!

Acclaimed film director, Sidney Lumet would have celebrated his 100th birthday this June. In celebration the Senate is excited to present one of his best regarded and beloved films, Dog Day Afternoon, starring Al Pacino and John Cazale!

Based on a real-life robbery turned hostage situation, this typically grimy piece of 70s realism was rightfully lauded by critics upon release and, today, has earned its place in the pantheon of great American films. In no small part its captivating and honest portrayal of desperate people at the edges of society solidified the legendary status of its director and star.

Brimming with tension and pathos, it is just as potent now as it was in 1975.

Come see it the way Mr. Lumet intended, on a big screen, in a movie theater, surrounded by fellow lovers of film!
